Gynecological Imaging In Chennai
Imaging in gynecology is the use of medical modalities like ultrasound, MRI, and CT to visualize female reproductive organs. It is the cornerstone for diagnosing conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, and ovarian masses, as well as for evaluating pelvic pain, infertility, and gynecologic cancers.
Gynecologic imaging relies on a few key modalities, each chosen depending on the clinical question:
1. Ultrasonography (US)
Primary Use: First-line diagnostic tool because it is highly accessible, does not use ionizing radiation, and provides real-time imaging.
Techniques:
Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVUS):
Provides high-resolution images of the uterus and ovaries, ideal for detecting endometrial polyps, early pregnancy, and adnexal masses.
Transabdominal Ultrasound:
Provides a wider, deeper view of the pelvis, often used for larger masses or in conjunction with TVUS.
Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS):
Involves injecting sterile saline into the uterine cavity to better visualize endometrial pathology (like fibroids or polyps).
Doppler US:
Assesses blood flow to distinguish between benign and malignant masses or to evaluate ovarian torsion.
2. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Primary Use:
The modality of choice for characterizing soft-tissue anomalies. It provides detailed anatomic mapping.
Applications: Excellent for evaluating complex pelvic masses, deep infiltrating endometriosis, and staging gynecologic malignancies (cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancer).
3. Computed Tomography (CT)
Primary Use: Used primarily for oncology staging and detecting metastatic disease.
Applications: Quickly scans the abdomen and pelvis to evaluate the spread of gynecologic cancers to lymph nodes, the liver, or other organs.
4. Specialized Imaging :
Hysterosalpingography (HSG):
An X-ray procedure that uses contrast dye to evaluate the patency of the fallopian tubes and the shape of the uterine cavity, primarily used in infertility workups.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET-CT):
Frequently combined with CT to evaluate recurrent or locally advanced cancers.
